Dental crowns are custom-made, tooth-shaped caps placed over a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth to restore its shape, strength, size, and appearance. They fully cover the visible portion of the tooth above the gum line and are commonly used to protect a tooth after a root canal, support a large filling, restore a broken tooth, or improve the look of misshapen or discolored teeth.

The crown placement process typically involves two visits. During the first appointment, the tooth is examined, reshaped, and cleaned. An impression is taken, and a temporary crown is placed while the permanent one is being crafted. At the second visit, usually two to three weeks later, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is fitted, checked for bite, and cemented into place.

In some cases, same-day crowns can be created using CAD/CAM technology such as the CEREC® system. This advanced approach allows for digital scanning, milling, and fitting of a custom crown—all in a single visit.

Traditional Crowns

Durable Results with a Classic Approach

Traditional crowns typically require two dental visits over the course of two to three weeks. These crowns can be made from porcelain, metal, or porcelain-fused-to-metal, depending on the location of the tooth and your aesthetic goals. During the first visit, the tooth is prepared, and a temporary crown is placed while the permanent crown is being fabricated in a dental lab.

While traditional crowns provide a good fit and long-term durability, the final appearance can vary depending on the material used—especially for teeth in the front of the mouth. This makes material selection an important consideration when both function and appearance matter.
